Pi Day Challenge at University of Toledo

The University of Toledo Engineering College Computing (ECC), in collaboration with VES, hosted a highly engaging “Pi Day Challenge” on Friday, March 13, 2026, in the North Engineering Atrium.

Students participated in a Raspberry Pi–based programming challenge to build MANET radios capable of receiving radio broadcasts of Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) flight data and plotting and visualizing it within situational awareness software. Pizza and Schmucker’s pies were of course also provided for all participants.

VES engineers, many of whom are proud University of Toledo College of Engineering graduates and ECC alumni, guided participants as they rapidly prototyped solutions similar to the emerging technologies and real-world challenges our teams tackle every day.

A special thank you to Brad Lilly, Eric Smith, Evan Stewart, Ted Nowicki, and Elliott Stiene from the VES team, for helping make the event a success.

We also appreciate Adam Kiersey, Jeremy Garber, and Jonathan Rethorn for helping set up and promote the event to students and working with Makerspace students who 3D-printed the enclosure cases used during the challenge.

It was great to see students applying their skills in a fun, hands-on way while celebrating Pi Day in the process.
